Lehigh's Failing Grade

Among the many groups of people I have no use for are college professors. Spend your life surrounded by 18 year olds, and you become a Peter Pan. I snickered when I read that Lehigh's Peter Pans want to revoke Donald Trump's honorary degree from 1988.

A faculty spokesperson said the motion isn’t about Trump’s politics,  but his behavior, as well as his sexist, racist and Islamophobic comments.  While most people who have such honorary degrees conferred upon them have no real qualifications,  to then take back a degree 30 years later, after the person achieves the Presidency of The United States?

Despite their denial,  their vote is so awash in politics,  one must question if they themselves deserve the degrees which they have.

The Lehigh Trustees wisely decided against revoking Mr./President Trump's degree.  Enter Bill White, Morning Call Columnist and Lehigh journalism teacher. Bill agrees with the students and late night TV hosts that Donald Trump has character defects. He believes that the trustees don't want to offend their wealthy Republican donors, but doesn't understand the principles beyond that not to revoke the degree.  Bill has forgotten that when Trump was awarded that degree in 1988, he was a real estate expert and Art Of The Deal best seller.  Bill has forgotten that before politics in 2014, Trump was a reality TV star with the Apprentice.  Lehigh charges $66,000 a year to take classes with Bill White,  who displayed no insight beyond the TV hosts he eagerly awaits every night.

  1. Mike,

Why doesn't the Lehigh faculty pass a resolution condemning itself for sitting on its hands and doing nothing when the student voted to have Trump as a commencement speaker?

Because they are sure they are never wrong about anything.

  2. The establishment and liberal professors want to exact some revenge on the non-establishment and conservative POTUS. The Lehigh Board of Trustees made the right call: Don't let the leftist media and fringe elements control your students or staff.
Despite the irrational thought processes utilized by the professors, I do believe that Lehigh still wants to offer education that is rounded; not astounded.

  3. I wish I had the resources to get a list of every recipient of an Honorary Degree from Lehigh. I'm sure we'll find many who have not lived up to the citations of the award, but no calls for revocation. I was always amazed at how colleges and universities, including local ones, had no problem inviting and invoking honors on the likes of Bill Clinton, whose disgrace came while actually serving as President of the United States.

  4. Wisdom does come with age. Whiny, cause chasing, lemming students need to earn a paycheck to join reality.

Lehigh should be celebrating the Trump presidency.

  5. don@2:12, I think that lehigh as an institution should not be celebrating or lamenting any presidency, but should be honoring commitments and contracts that it engaged in. if by chance they want to learn a lesson, and not confer honorary degrees to future commencement speakers, i would have no objection.

  6. Having a connection to the President of our country should be something to be proud of. It should be a featured article in one of their alumni journals.

You can't get any higher than POTUS.

  7. Trump is and never was a real estate expert. He is an expert on not paying taxes and screwing contractors.
